A colorful locomotive commemorating the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. The most widely used steam locomotive in North America between 1850 and 1880, the classic American was considered obsolete by 1900, when the need for larger engines became acute. Small numbers of 4 4 0s, however, continued to be built until the late 1940s, and a few were still in service until the early 1960s. More than 25,000 of them had been produced.
