After founding the town of Durango, Colorado in 1880, the Denver & Rio Grande Railway began construction of a rail line the following year that connected their new community to nearby Silverton. Designed primarily to haul gold and silver from the San Juan Mountains, it is estimated that more than 300 million in precious metals have traveled the line throughout its history.
