The DC-8-61 was the first of the DC-8 aircraft to take to the air and utilized early GE engine design. The DC-8 was developed to compete with the very successful Boeing 707 but the goal at Douglas was to go beyond just designing an airplane to compete with the 707. The DC-8 was built to a flexible design that could be adapted to technological evolution that would inevitably come with aerospace developments. After over 40 years in the air, the DC-8 design has been vindicated with that expand-ability built into the original DC-8 design. Minicraft Model Kits new DC-8-61 is built to accurate 1/144 scale and features recessed panel lines, detailed landing gear and offer the first of the early GE engines used on the DC-8.
