The 231 class (formerly 131) of goods locomotives known as the Russian Ludmillas, incorporated the concept of a robust and powerful goods diesel locomotive. Based on the BR 130 locomotives previously purchased by the East German State Railways, this sub-class was now specially designed to haul heavy goods trains. Rock solid, simple and ordinary, some examples of this old faithful Soviet export product are still in service on German railway tracks. There is a worthy representative of this BR 131/231 class in the possession of the Railway Museum of Saxony (SEM) at Chemnitz.
