The English Electric/BAC Lightning, which was the first real supersonic RAF fighter/interceptor, went into service in 1960. It achieved a remarkable rate of climb with full load. The short range was balanced by a large ventral tank and wing tanks. The Lightning remained on active service with the RAF until 1988 and was supplied to Kuwait and Saudi-Arabia among others.
