The F4U Corsair has been universally acknowledged as the best shipboard fighter of World War II. It developed a reputation for being fast, rugged, and reliable. Originally conceived in 1938, the Corsair was designed around the new Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine. This engine created nearly 2000 hp and was coupled to the largest propeller used on a fighter up to that date. The Corsair became the first US fighter plane to exceed 400 mph in level flight. The plane served well through WWII and Korea. It served as a day fighter, night fighter, and ground attack plane. It served the French Aeronavale and other foreign Air Forces until well into the 60's, a true testimony to the durability of a great plane!
