O scale model trains are the best size for kids ages 8 years and up. O size trains are small enough for little hands, but big enough to keep the trains on track. Especially for children, the smaller scales like HO can be too delicate and difficult to align on the track. O scale is also the most popular size for using trains around the Christmas tree. O scale trains are built to a scale of 1/48th in size. This also works out to be ¼" on a model is equal to 1' on the real thing. Gauge is the width of the track. Only trains that fit the track will run on it. O Gauge is not a scale, but the term is used to define O Scale trains as well as toy trains that run on track that is 1.25" between the outside rails (5 scale feet).
